Visitor arrivals to Macao increase by 7.9 pct in October

MACAO, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Macao's visitor arrivals in October increased by 7.9 percent year-on-year and 16.2 percent month-to-month, due to the National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holidays, the special administrative region (SAR)'s statistics department has said.

Data issued from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) on Thursday indicated that visitor arrivals totaled 2.89 million in October. Overnight visitors increased to 1.47 million and same-day visitors increased to 1.42 million, up by 7.3 percent and 8.4 percent respectively year-on year.

The average length of stay of visitors (1.2 days) held steady year-on-year, with that of overnight visitors and same-day visitors remaining unchanged at 2.2 days and 0.2 day respectively.

Visitors from the Chinese mainland grew by 12.8 percent year-on-year to 2.06 million in October, mainly from Guangdong province, Hunan province and Fujian province. Visitors from the Republic of Korea (80,528) surged by 54.5 percent, while those from Hong Kong (465,912) and China's Taiwan region (85,196) dropped by 9.4 percent and 2.1 percent respectively.

Meanwhile, visitors from the United States, Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom registered decreases.

DSEC data also showed that in the first ten months of 2017, visitor arrivals totalled 26.72 million, up by 4.6 percent year-on-year. Overnight visitors (14.11 million) rose by 10.4 percent while same-day visitors (12.61 million) dropped by 1.2 percent. The average length of stay of visitors (1.2 days) held stable year-on-year, with that of overnight visitors (2.1 days) falling by 0.1 day and that of same-day visitors staying at 0.2 day.

In the first 10 months this year, visitors from the Chinese mainland (18.15 million) and the Republic of Korea (724,637) increased by 7.0 percent and 36.8 percent respectively year-on-year.
