ATHENS, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- The Greek Coast Guard seized 1.6 tons of cannabis on a speedboat and detained 10 suspects in a large-scale sea operation that took place in the Ionian Sea and the Aegean Sea, the Greek national news agency AMNA reported late Sunday.

The crime organization, which had been under surveillance for weeks, was smuggling large quantities of drugs into Greece and other countries from Albania using speedboats, the report said.

The sea operation began on Friday, when the speedboat entered the Greek territorial waters after leaving the Albanian shore.

The drug bust continued until late Saturday and was made south of the coast of Attica, between Makronissos and Kea islands following a chase using boats, helicopters and even divers.

The law enforcement authorities detained two Albanians and an Italian national on the speedboat, and found numerous plastic bags containing cannabis, according to the report.
