HANGZHOU, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Cai Mingzhao, president of Xinhua News Agency, emphasized social responsibility in cyberspace communication Monday.

Cai made the remarks at the Forum on Internet Communication and Social Responsibility of the Fourth World Internet Conference (WIC), in the eastern China town of Wuzhen.

"On the basis of mutual respect and mutual trust, we should enhance communications and exchanges, and deepen pragmatic cooperation under the principles of peace, security, openness and cooperation, to jointly shoulder the social responsibilities in cyberspace communication," Cai said.

He said Xinhua is willing to make more efforts to push forward the development of cyberspace communication in the future.

He called for building "a community with common future in cyberspace" by removing the digital divide and narrowing the North-South gap.

As of June 2017, there were 3.89 billion Internet users around the world, with 751 million of them in China, the most of any country worldwide, according to reports issued during the conference.

Internet authorities, businessmen, scholars, and media leaders at the forum agreed to "take on social responsibility, promote civilization and protect cyberspace order."

The fourth WIC, with the theme of "Developing digital economy for openness and shared benefits -- building a community of common future in cyberspace," runs Sunday to Tuesday.
