GABORONE, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- The government of Botswana on Thursday expressed its regret about the U.S. decision to recognize Jerusalem as the Capital of Israel.
"This decision is condemned in that it is contrary to the strong international consensus which affirms that the status of Jerusalem should be determined through a negotiation process between the State of Israel and the State of Palestine," said the statement released by the Ministry of International Affairs and Cooperation.
According to the statement, the government wishes to note that Jerusalem is being claimed by both the State of Israel and the State of Palestine as their Capital city.
It also urged the U.S. to reconsider its decision in the interest of preserving peace process in the Middle East.
U.S. President Donald Trump formally recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital on Wednesday, which sparked violent clashes in the Middle East region.
