NEW DELHI, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- A Japanese tourist has been drugged and robbed by a fake tourist guide in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said Friday.
The incident took place in Sarnath, a Buddhist holy place near the holy city of Varanasi, Thursday, hours after 20-year-old Akeero Tanaka from Tokyo arrived there.
"The fake tourist guide befriended Tanaka and then offered him a soft drink laced with sedatives. The victim drank it and fell unconscious," a senior police official said.
Tanaka woke up hours later only to find that he was robbed of his bag that contained his passport, 50,000 Japanese yen (445 U.S. dollars) and around 20,000 Indian rupees (312 dollars) in cash, along with other items, he said.
"A complaint has been lodged with us. A major manhunt has been launched to track down the accused," the official added.
