SYDNEY, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- Eight time world champion BMX and mountain biking cyclist Caroline Buchanan remained in intensive care on Wednesday after the 27 year old Australian suffered severely hurt in a one-car crash in Central New South Wales State.

In a post to social media, the two time olympian revealed the extent of her injuries, which include a broken sternum, broken nose and collapsed lungs.

"I wouldn't say 2017 ended quite as planned," Buchanan told her followers.

"It's been a rough couple of days in ICU after a vehicle roll."

"I just moved to a private room and everything is moving in a positive recovery direction."

Just six months ago, after winning silver in the BMX world championships in the U.S., Cycling Australia's elite female cyclist of the year claimed yet another world mountain biking title in Italy in the four cross category.

Although Buchanan is expected to make a full recovery over the coming months, she did acknowledge in her post that the "off season just got a little more tough!!"
