KUWAIT CITY, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- Kuwait as non-permanent member of the UN Security Council (UNSC) will take its responsibilities seriously, Kuwait's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Mansour Al-Otaibi told the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) Wednesday.

On June 2, the UN General Assembly elected Cote d'Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, Kuwait, Poland and Peru as non-permanent members of the UNSC to serve a two-year term starting Jan. 1, 2018.

Kuwait will cooperate with all members in accomplishing the Security Council's tasks and responsibilities, Al-Otaibi said.

Kuwait is one of the strongest supporters and defenders of the Charter of the United Nations, international law and the goals and principles of the United Nations and will continue doing so, Al-Otaibi said.

Noting that the importance of the Security Council lies in ensuring that its basic functions affect the security and stability of states and the prevention of conflicts, he said Kuwait's accession to the Security Council is considered a major achievement of the Kuwaiti foreign policy.

He added that the most important and outstanding achievement is what will be achieved during the term of membership, especially that the Council is currently pursuing great responsibilities and issues of concern to the State of Kuwait, as most of the issues on the agenda concern the Arab countries such as Palestine, Yemen, Syria and Iraq and also affect the security of Kuwait and the region in general.

He pointed out that the membership of Kuwait comes at a difficult time, especially since many countries in the Arab and Islamic world are witnessing continuous conflicts for several years which have negative repercussions on security and stability in the region.

He hoped that through its membership in the Security Council and its presidency of the Council for February Kuwait will contribute to the provision of security and stability, especially between the Arab and Islamic countries.
