HAVANA, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- A high-ranking foreign affairs representative for the European Union began a two-day visit in Cuba on Wednesday in a bid to enhance bilateral ties.

Cuba and the EU had previously reached an agreement for political dialogue, which has yet to be approved by the parliaments of the EU member countries.

European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini's trip to the Caribbean island is aimed at working with the Cuban government on an early implementation of the deal.

The first meeting of the EU-Cuba Joint Council at the ministerial level will be held during her visit, according to a press release by the office of the EU High Representative.

Mogherini's agenda in Cuba includes meetings with Cuban senior officials, visits to historic and cultural sites in Havana, and a speech to be made on the EU-Latin America relations at St Geronimo's University.

Mogherini last visited Cuba in March 2016 when she held talks with President Raul Castro.
