BRUSSELS, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- In his New Year's speech on Thursday, Philippe, King of the Belgians, praised the strong economic growth in Belgium and Europe, saying the benefits accrued should trickle down to all citizens.

The speech was made to state bodies and is traditionally delivered at the Royal Palace in Brussels on the occasion of the new year.

"As Belgium and Europe return to stronger economic growth, it is also essential that no one feels left behind," he said. "It is important to create a better match between supply and demand in the labor market, and this challenge can only be met by a joint effort from all actors: companies, teachers, and job seekers."

The King emphasized the importance of diversity in society for the stability of the country.

"We are fortunate to live in a very diverse society, and working for a more harmonious society contributes to its stability," he said, adding: "Anything that aims to strengthen the cohesion between individuals and between groups is of major importance."

At the European level, the King of the Belgians insisted on continued European efforts. "We can rejoice that over the past year, Europe has recovered, and the year 2018 should be one of new impetus, particularly in the areas of security and economic and monetary union."

At the international level, King Philippe also reflected on the fact that Belgium can play a more invested role and take on more responsibilities given its privileged position.

"Whether one thinks of the exacerbated geopolitical tensions in the world, global warming, or the profound revolution that artificial intelligence brings, through our structures, we have adequate instruments to help influence the changes the world is currently facing."
