Zambia, Zimbabwe reaffirm commitment to strengthen ties

LUSAKA, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- Zambian President Edgar Lungu and his Zimbabwean counterpart Emmerson Mnangagwa on Friday held a closed-door meeting to discuss bilateral issues concerning the two countries.

The two leaders held the talks at State House which lasted for one hour following the Zimbabwean leader's one day working visit.

Zambian Presidential Spokesperson Amos Chanda told reporters that the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen bilateral ties.

According to the presidential spokesperson, the Zambian leader assured his guest of support in the transition period taking place in that country.

Zambia, he said, was committed to supporting Zimbabwe to ensure that the country hold free and fair elections.

On his part, the Zimbabwean leader briefed his Zambian counterpart of the transition process and preparations ahead of elections to be held later this year.

The two leaders further emphasized the need to promote linkages that will enhance bilateral ties such as rail and road connections.
