ACCRA, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Unknown gunmen stormed a police station at Kwabenya, a suburb of Ghana's capital, in the early hours of Sunday, killing one police inspector, Ghanaian police said.

Afua Tengey, Greater Accra Regional police spokesperson, said seven suspected armed robbers in custody at the police station were freed by the attackers.

A source at the Kwabenya Police Station told Xinhua that gunmen attacked the station, firing shots towards the counter.

A police inspector seated in his vehicle at the station was dragged down and shot by the armed men. He died at the police hospital, disclosed the source.

A manhunt has been launched for the escapees and the attackers while the rest of the inmates have been transported to the Madina Divisional Police.
