WASHINGTON, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Representative Joe Kennedy will represent the Democratic Party to deliver a response to U.S. President Donald Trump's State of the Union (SOTU) address next week, the Democratic Party announced Friday.
Kennedy, the grandson of the late Senator Robert Kennedy and great-nephew of the late President John F. Kennedy, is a 37-year-old rising star in the Democratic Party. He is serving his third term as a Massachusetts congressman.
"Congressman Kennedy is a relentless fighter for working Americans," said House Minority leader Nancy Pelosi in a statement published Friday, while jointly announcing the decision with the Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer.
"While President Trump has consistently broken his promises to the middle class, Congressman Kennedy profoundly understands the challenges facing hard-working men and women across the country," she added.
Schumer said in a statement that Kennedy will try to make clear that "Democrats are laser-focused on enacting policies to benefit middle class Americans, not special interests or the wealthiest."
Trump is set to deliver his first SOTU to Congress next Tuesday, and expected to roll out his immigration plan and a 1.7-trillion-dollar infrastructure package during his speech.
