ALGIERS, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Algerian government allocated 70 million U.S. dollars to the organizing committee for the third African Youth Games, due in July in Algiers, Minister of Sports and Youth Hadi Ould Ali said on Sunday.

"The Algerian government has granted 70 million dollars to the Organizing Committee for the third African Youth Games to ensure successful organization of the continental event," said Ali.

Ali further thanked the Association of African National Olympic Committees, which donated 1 million dollars to the organizing committee.

He stressed that all actors in the African sport movement will make every effort to make the event distinctive to showcase Africa's capability of organizing major sporting events.

The African Youth Games are held every four years since 2010. The first edition was held in Rabat, Morocco in July 2010, while the second one took place in the Botswana capital of Gaborone in May 2014.

The event consists of 20 compulsory sports, deemed as a trial run for the Olympic Games in 2020.
