Backgrounder: Past chairpersons of African Union

ADDIS ABABA, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Rwandan President Paul Kagame on Sunday took over the chairmanship of the African Union (AU) on Sunday during the 30th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the AU.

Kagame, who leads the supervision of the implementation of AU institutional reforms, is expected to serve his term for a year.

The following are the past chairpersons of the AU in chronological order and their positions when serving as the chairperson.
