6.1-magnitude earthquake rattles Kabul, northeast Afghanistan

KABUL, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 jolted Kabul, north, and northeastern regions of Afghanistan at 11:40 a.m. local time on Wednesday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The epicenter, with a depth of 191.19 km, was initially determined to be at 36.5432 degrees north latitude and 70.8155 degrees east longitude, according to USGS.

No report has been released on possible loss of life or property damage, head of Natural Disaster Management Authority in the northeast Badakhshan province Sayed Abdullah Hamayon Deqan told Xinhua, adding Jarm district was strongly shocked due to the quake.

He said that efforts are underway to check if there were any loss of life or property damages in the mountainous Jarm district.
