BEIRUT, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- The Palestinian leadership was set to meet Saturday to discuss the security situation inside the Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp following the clashes that erupted Friday, the National News Agency (NNA) reported.

According to the NNA report, the Palestinian leadership will demand an investigation be opened into Friday events and for those responsible be held accountable.

Clashes broke out Friday afternoon after a failed assassination attempt on joint Palestinian security force Brig. Gen. Bassam al-Saad.

Following the failed attempt, fighters exchanged machine gun fire and rocket-propelled grenades in the tight confines of the densely populated camp.

The situation deteriorated further and led to the accidental death of Abd al-Rahim Bsam al-Moqdah, who was standing on his balcony as the clashes broke out.

The violence soon spread to armed clashes between hardline elements in the neighborhood of Safsaf and the Fatah movement.

Houses and shops were severely damaged while generators were burnt.

After the outbreak, the Lebanese army installed more security measures at the entrance checkpoint of the camp and closed many of the gates.
