Protesters set ablaze bus to protest killing of Dalit student in India

NEW DELHI, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Irate protesters, mostly students took to streets on Monday and resorted to arson in India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh to protest the killing of a 26-year-Dalit man, police said.

Authorities rushed in police contingents to control the situation.

"Student protesters came out carrying posters and shouting slogans demanding arrest of the main accused responsible for the murder of the fellow student," a police official said. "The situation was brought under control immediately."

The Dalit man -- Dilip Saroj who was pursuing law at the Allahabad University, was beaten to death with bricks, hockey stick and iron rod at a restaurant by a group of men on Friday. He slipped into comma and died on Sunday.

The murder was caught on mobile phone camera by a passerby. It went viral on social media networking sites.

Police have arrested a few persons including a waiter of the restaurant. However the main accused is evading police arrest and has gone into hiding.

Reports said the argument between Saroj and the men who attacked him started after one of them bumped against Saroj.

Dalits were previously known as untouchables in India and fall at the bottom of India's caste hierarchy.
