MADRID, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- The Spanish national airline Iberia on Friday celebrated the Chinese New Year by offering presents to their clients flying on the first day of the Year of the Dog.

All of the company's passengers on flights taking off from the Spanish capital of Madrid received a red envelope with two presents inside: one was a red wristband with an infinity symbol to bring good luck, and the other, a voucher for an 8 percent discount on flights between Madrid and Shanghai during 2018.

Iberia has been flying a direct route between the two cities since 2016, with flights on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday.

The company also published a video in which two employees, a member of their cabin staff and a check-in worker, give a New Year's greeting in Mandarin and Spanish.

Iberia has a fleet of 135 airplanes and two subsidiaries -- Iberia Express and Iberia Regional Air Nostrum. It offers flights to around 50 European cities as well as destinations in north and south America, Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

There are currently 25 weekly direct flights between Spain and China operated by airlines such as Air China, Capital Airlines, China Eastern, Cathay Pacific as well as Iberia.

On Wednesday, ahead of the Chinese Lunar New Year, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy extended his greetings to the Chinese community in the country.
