UNITED NATIONS, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed Martin Griffiths of Britain as his special envoy for Yemen, said Stephane Dujarric, Guterres' spokesman, on Friday.

Griffiths succeeds Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed of Mauritania.

Griffiths brings extensive experience in conflict resolution, negotiation, mediation and humanitarian affairs, said Dujarric.

Between 2012 and 2014, he served as an adviser to three special envoys of the UN secretary-general for Syria, and deputy head of the UN Supervision Mission in Syria.

He also worked in the British diplomatic service and for various international humanitarian organizations including the United Nations Children's Fund.

In 1994, he served in Geneva as the director of the Department of Humanitarian Affairs, which preceded the establishment of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. From 1998 to 1999, he served as deputy to the UN Emergency Relief Coordinator in New York.

Griffiths, born in 1951, holds a Master Degree from the University of London, and he is a qualified barrister.
