BEIJING, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- Railway passenger numbers will likely continue to rise on Tuesday as the week-long Chinese Lunar New Year holiday draws to an end.

Some 10.6 million passenger trips are expected to be made on China's railway network on Tuesday, up from 9.5 million trips the previous day and by 8.3 percent year on year, the China Railway Corporation said, as more people will return from their hometowns.

The railway system added 914 trains to meet the travel demand, up from 636 additional trains on Monday.

The seven-day Lunar New Year holiday began on Feb. 15. A 40-day period of heavy passenger traffic, known as "chunyun," spans from Feb. 1 to March 12.

During the 40 days, about 390 million passenger trips are expected to be made via railways, up 8.8 percent from the previous year, according to the company.
