HANOI, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam has planned to win 3-5 golds at the 2018 Asian Games (ASIAD) slated for August in Indonesia, the country's General Department of Sports and Physical Training said on Friday.

Among over 200 Vietnamese athletes who will compete at 20 out of 40 sports of the 2018 ASIAD, swimmers, shooters, runners, weightlifters and gymnasts are most expected to bag home medals.

Some 60 Vietnamese elite athletes are training intensively to gain medals at the 2018 ASIAD, and berths to the 2020 Summer Olympics, including top woman swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien and woman runner Le Tu Chinh undergoing training in the United States.

Vietnamese shooters, wrestlers, Karate fighters and gymnastics athletes will be sent abroad for training and compete at international tournaments.

In the previous ASIAD in 2014 in South Korea, Vietnam ranked the 21st in the tally, with one gold, 10 silver and 21 bronze medals. Vietnam did their best in the 2002 Busan Asiad, grabbing four golds.

In 2018 and following years, Vietnam will strengthen sports cooperation with other Southeast Asian countries, and sports powerhouses such as China, Japan, South Korea, the United States and Hungary, the official said.
