RAMALLAH, March 1 (Xinhua) -- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said on Thursday that the international promotion of the peace process with Israel is "growing," state-run news agency WAFA reported.

Abbas made the remarks in an address to the general assembly of his Fatah Party's revolutionary council meeting in Ramallah.

"The peace process with Israel has to end up with the establishment of an independent Palestinian state," Abbas told the council.

He also stressed the importance of holding a conference to revive the peace process based on multiple mechanism.

"New serious and real talks have to be launched to implement the principle of the two-state solution, including the establishment of a Palestinian state on 1967 borders," he said.

"East Jerusalem will be the capital of the future independent Palestinian state," Abbas noted.

At a special session of the UN Security Council last month, Abbas presented a Palestinian peace initiative which addresses the fundamental problems that have led to the failure of the peace efforts for decades.

The Palestinian leader proposed holding an international peace conference based on UN resolutions in mid-2018, which should be attended by both Palestinian and Israeli sides.

Abbas' offer came amid the rising tension between Palestine and the United States since U.S. President Donald Trump recognized the disputed holy city of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel on Dec. 6.

In late February, the U.S. said it decided to move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem in May.

In return, the Palestinians have announced that the U.S. is no longer a sponsor of the peace process because of its biased attitudes toward Israel. Enditem
