BAGHDAD, March 8 (Xinhua) -- An Iraqi court on Thursday sentenced the sister of the former leader of Islamic State (IS) in Iraq to death over terrorism charges, a judicial spokesman said.

Abu Omer al-Baghdadi's sister was sentenced by the Iraqi Central Criminal Court after found guilty for joining the extremist group and providing logistical support to the terrorist organization, said Abdul Sattar al-Biraqdar, spokesman for Iraq's Supreme Judicial Council.

Biraqdar said in a statement that the woman, whose name was not given, was also found guilty of distributing money for some IS militants in Mosul when the city was under control of the terrorist group.

The woman's husband was one of IS group's leaders and was sentenced to death earlier by the court, the statement added.

Abu Omer al-Baghdadi was reportedly killed during an operation in the Tharthar area north of Baghdad in 2010, and was replaced by the current top leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

After IS was defeated by Iraqi forces, hundreds of its loyalists were killed or captured, with many others still at large either in hideouts in Iraq or abroad.
