SAO PAULO, March 11 (Xinhua) -- Sao Paolo have named their former player Diego Aguirre as the club's new head coach following the sacking of Dorival Junior.

The 52-year-old Uruguayan will take charge of the Tricolor for the first time in their Copa do Brasil match against CRB on Wednesday.

"Aguirre is a modern coach who has had proven results," football manager Rai said in a statement on the the club's official website on Sunday. "We hope that his style will fit in with that of the club."

Aguirre has been out of work since quitting his job as coach of Argentina's San Lorenzo last September. He represented the six-time Brazilian Serie A champions as a player in 1990, scoring three goals in eight matches.

Dorival Junior was dismissed following the Tricolor's 2-0 loss to rivals Palmeiras in the Sao Paulo state championship last Thursday. Dorival was the sixth Sao Paulo manager to be sacked in less than three years.
