JERUSALEM, March 18 (Xinhua) -- An Israeli security guard succumbed to his wounds on Sunday night a few hours after a Palestinian stabbed him in East Jerusalem, a local hospital said.

A spokesperson for the Sha'arei Tzedek Medical Center in Jerusalem said the 30-year-old man died of his wounds.

In the afternoon, a knife-wielding Palestinian man stabbed the guard in East Jerusalem's Old City. A police spokesman said the assailant was shot dead by policemen at the scene.

The attack took place next to the Iron Gate, near the flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, a sensitive area where Muslim, Jewish, and Christian holy sites are located.

The Shin Bet security service identified the attacker as a resident of the West Bank city of Nablus. He is married and a father of two, according to the Shin Bet.

The incident was part of a fresh wave of violence in the region, sparked in the wake of United States President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel on last Dec. 6.

On Friday, a Palestinian ran over Israeli soldiers near a West Bank settlement. Two soldiers were killed and another two were wounded in the attack.
