WARSAW, March 19 (Xinhua) -- Cooperation between Poland and Germany is necessary to ensure cooperation within the European Union in the context of new EU agenda, Polish PM Mateusz Morawiecki told a joint press conference with visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday.

"We believe that close cooperation between Poland and Germany is necessary to ensure very good cooperation in Europe, both in the context of the new EU agenda following Brexit after March 2019, and of a new financial framework as well as common digital, security and industrial policy," Morawiecki told reporters.

Morawiecki met with Merkel to discuss bilateral cooperation, EU's future after Brexit, EU budget, energy security and the migration crisis.

The Polish PM also congratulated Merkel on her re-election.

Merkel, on a one-day visit to Poland, said at the joint press conference that the German government wanted to "cultivate good neighborly relations".

"We want to show, even if our talks are not always simple, that as neighbors we are closely connected with each other, that we want to develop our relations and that we really want to move forward," she said.

The German chancellor said she welcomed the European Commission's statement that talks with Poland, concerning the reform of Poland's judicial system, were favorable.

"Talks with the European Commission are very intense, of course, we hope that there will be solutions here... I would be pleased if the European Commission says that these talks were successful," said Merkel.

Merkel also noted that Poland was contributing to the reception of refugees in the EU.

"Today, we have emphasized that Poland also accepts refugees, perhaps in geographical terms they are different refugees, from other regions, but Poland is also making its contribution," said Merkel.

Poland is the second country, after France, visited by Merkel, who will serve her fourth term as the head of government. Merkel's new cabinet was sworn in nearly six months after the parliamentary election.
