"Pacific Rim: Uprising" tops Chinese box office

BEIJING, March 27 (Xinhua) -- American sci-fi action film "Pacific Rim: Uprising" led the Chinese film market in the week ending March 25, earning nearly 410 million yuan (about 65.3 million U.S. dollars), China Film News reported Tuesday.

The movie, a sequel to the 2013 blockbuster "Pacific Rim," hit Chinese screens on March 23. Set in 2035, it tells the story of a new generation of pilots, who are better armed with more advanced technology, fighting against a new threat.

Directed by Steven S. DeKnight, the film stars "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" actor John Boyega, "The Fate of the Furious" actor Scott Eastwood, as well as Chinese actress Jing Tian.

Second place went to American adventure film "Tomb Raider," which took nearly 177 million yuan at the box office last week. It has sold more than 438 million yuan in tickets at the Chinese box office since its release on March 16.

Domestic action film "Operation Red Sea" came in third, making about 75.7 million yuan last week. It has made 3.55 billion yuan since hitting screens in Chinese cinemas on Feb. 16.

The documentary "Amazing China" took fourth place, generating about 69.2 million yuan. The film has grossed nearly 400 million yuan since its release on March 2.

Rounding out the top five was Marvel Studios superhero film "Black Panther," which has grossed about 650 million yuan since hitting Chinese screens on March 9.
