Aga Khan-owned thoroughbred Vazirabad tops turf race at Dubai World Cup

DUBAI, March 31 (Xinhua) -- French thoroughbred Vazirabad won the 3,200 meter turf race known as the Dubai Gold Cup at the Meydan hippodrome, beating 15 competitors for the third time with a track record of three minutes and 17.92 seconds here on Saturday.

Ridden by jockey Christophe Soumillon and trained by Alain De Royer-Dupre, Vazirabad won ahead of its British rivals Sheikh Zayed Road and Rare Rhythm.

Vazirabad is owned by British national His Highness Aga Khan, the spiritual leader of 25 million global members of Isma'ilism, a community with within Shia Islam.

The Aga Khan stables cashed in 600,000 U.S. dollars prize money while a total of one million U.S. dollars of prize money was distributed for the Dubai Gold Cup.

The Dubai Gold Cup is one of nine horse races which represent the annual Dubai World Cup with a total prize money of 30 million U.S. dollars for the world's richest horse race.
