BERLIN, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Robert Lewandowski provided three goals helping Bayern Munich to whitewash Borussia Dortmund 6-0 meanwhile Schalke recorded their sixth consecutive victory after edging ten-men Freiburg 2-0 at the 28th round in Bundesliga on Saturday.

Third placed Borussia Dortmund suffered a heavy 6-0 defeat as Bayern took another step to clinch the sixth consecutive Bundesliga title with a faultless performance on home soil.

The German record champions caught a bright start in front of 75,000 spectators as former Dortmund striker Lewandowski capitalized on a through ball from Thomas Mueller to open the scoring with five minutes played.

Bayern gained momentum and pressed Dortmund into the defence as James Rodriguez tapped home a square pass from David Alaba in the 14th minute.

The "BVB" were unable to put up resistance as Thomas Mueller benefitted on a pinpoint cross from James Rodriguez at the far post to triple the lead with 23 minutes into the game.

Jupp Heynckes' men remained on the front foot whereas Dortmund couldn't hold the pace when Franck Ribery danced through the defence to make space for Lewandowski, who poked home from very close range to make it 4-0 on the scoreboards.

The hosts were not done with the scoring within the first half as Ribery chipped the ball over onrushing goalkeeper Roman Buerki following a one-two with James Rodriguez.

After the restart, Bayern retracted and let Dortmund do the work. However, Peter Stoeger's shot rattled only the woodwork once through Mario Goezte but Robert Lewandowski rounded off the goal festival after poking home Joshua Kimmich's square pass in the dying minutes of the game.

Dortmund suffered the sixth loss of the season but remain on the 3rd place. Runaway leaders Bayern Munich have a 17-point advantage in the standings. They have the chance to clinch the Bundesliga title on Saturday with five rounds to spare.

The "Royal Blues" cemented their second place in the standings after beating Freiburg on the second-half goals from Daniel Caligiuri and Guido Burgstaller.

Schalke controlled the ball from the kick off but Domenico Tedesco's men remained sloppy on the finish, as Nabil Bentaleb, Franco Di Santo and Naldo were unable to beat Freiburg goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow within the first half.

After the restart, Freiburg showed a vital sign and almost opened the scoring but Vincento Sierro rattled the woodwork at the hour mark.

However, the opener was scored at the other end of the pitch as Daniel Caligiuri broke the deadlock moments later after making no mistake from the penalty spot in the 66th minute.

Things went from bad to worse for the visitors as Nils Petersen received his marching order after booking his second yellow card in the 66th minute.

Schalke took advantage on their numerical advantage as Bentaleb's through ball allowed Gudi Burgstaller to beat onrushing custodian Schwolow into the bottom left with 73 minutes played.

With the victory, Schalke tighten their 2nd place in the standings meanwhile Freiburg stay on the 14th position after suffering the second loss in row.

Elsewhere, third placed Leipzig reaped a hard earned 3-2 victory over Hannover, who scored a late equalizer, which was reversed by the video referee due to an offside position.

Hoffenheim showed no mercy and crushed relegation threatened Cologne 6-0 as Serge Gnabry and Mark Uth wrapped up double strikes.

Bottom side Hamburg were held to a 1-1 draw by Stuttgart and missed the chance to grab vital points in the relegation battle.

Bayer Leverkusen shared the spoils with Augsburg following a goalless draw as well as Hertha Berlin and Wolfsburg, who played out a stalemate.

The following fixtures conclude the 28th round in Bundesliga on Sunday: Werder Bremen host Eintracht Frankfurt and Mainz encounter Borussia Monchengladbach.
