KUWAIT CITY, April 2 (Xinhua) -- Kuwait is keen on implementing Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015-2030) in collaboration with regional UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR), the Kuwait Fire Services Directorate (KFSD) said Monday.

Addressing a workshop held Monday in Kuwait on the implementation of Sendai Framework, KFSD Deputy Director General Khaled Al-Terkait said the directorate would join hands with international bodies to prepare a list of risks and build a database for losses resulting from disasters, with the aim of honoring the Sendai Framework.

Kuwait Liaison Officer with UNISDR Major Meshari Al-Faras said there were some loopholes that should be addressed in Sendai Framework in Kuwait, noting that there would not be sustainable development without an effective disaster risk management.

Fadi Jenan, deputy director general of UNISDR regional office, hoped the two-day workshop would have a great impact on disaster risk reduction in Kuwait.

The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction is a global plan for reducing disaster losses adopted by UN Member States in March 2015 in Sendai, Japan.

It is a 15-year, voluntary, non-binding agreement which recognizes that while a state has the key responsibility to reduce disaster risk, the private sector and other stakeholders should also be involved to share the responsibility.
