VLADIVOSTOK, Russia, April 5 (Xinhua) -- The population of the Far Eastern leopard in the Land of the Leopard National Park in Russia's Primorsky Krai has increased to 84 in 2017, local media reported Thursday.

"There were 84 adult leopards registered in 2017, as well as 19 kittens," Gleb Sedash, a senior researcher at the park, was quoted by the RIA Novosti news agency as saying.

He added that statistics only count adult leopards, as the mortality of kittens in the wild is very high.

In 2015, there were only about 70 leopards in the national park. The Far Eastern leopard, also known as the Amur leopard, is among the world's most endangered species.

Land of the Leopard is a 262,000-hectare national park that opened in April 2012 in Russia's Far East Primorsky Krai region.
