Kenya bourse trading hits new low as foreigners retreat

NAIROBI, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Both turnover and the blue chip index declined significantly Monday on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) as foreigners retreated.

The NSE 20 Share Index fell 10.98 points on Monday to close at 3,809.86, from 3,820.81, as it continued with a downward trend. On Friday last week, the blue-chip index declined by 15.68 points.

At least 11 stocks that make the 20 Share Index went down on Monday, including Safaricom (1.6 percent), Athi River Mining (3.6 percent), and Kenya Airways (1.9 percent).

The most traded stocks were Safaricom, moving 2 million shares, followed by Barclays Bank, 1.6 million shares.

The rest of the shares that made it to the top five traded stocks did not move more than a million shares. Kenya Power transacted 818,700 shares, Britam 645,700 shares and Mumias Sugar 443,600 shares.

Turnover decreased to some 6 million shares, down from 16.3 million shares on Friday last week, valued at 5.1 million U.S. dollars. Enditem
