JERUSALEM, April 12 (Xinhua) -- Israeli fighter jets struck a Hamas military compound in northern Gaza Strip early on Thursday, but the casualties were not immediately known.

An Israeli military spokesperson said the strike was in response to an explosive device that detonated against a military vehicle on Wednesday. Gaza militants fired machine guns at an Israeli jet, but missed it.

A statement released by the Sha'ar HaNegev Regional Council in southern Israel said that stray gunfire fired from Gaza toward the Israeli jets hit a building in the area, causing only minor damages.

On Wednesday morning, the Israeli military said an explosive device was denotated near a military vehicle at the fence between Israel and Gaza Strip. In response, the army attacked Hamas positions in Gaza, injuring several people, according to Palestinian media.

No group has claimed responsibility for placing the explosive, but the Israeli military held Hamas, which has ruled Gaza since 2007, "responsible for all occurrences originating from the Gaza Strip," while vowing not to allow Hamas to turn the security fence parameter into a combat zone."
