GAZA, April 18 (Xinhua) -- Israeli tanks stationed on the border between eastern Gaza Strip and Israel fired several tank shells into the coastal enclave, injuring five Palestinians, medics said Wednesday.

Ashraf al-Qedra, spokesman of the health ministry in Gaza said in a short text message that five Palestinians were injured by the shrapnel of an Israeli tank shell fired on an area east of the southern Gaza Strip city of Khan Younis close to the border with Israel.

He said the five casualties were in moderate condition and were evacuated to hospital in the city.

Meanwhile, Palestinian security sources and eyewitnesses said that the Israeli artillery fired several tank shells on eastern Khan Younis, targeting a military facility that belongs to militant groups in the coastal enclave.

Israel Radio reported quoting Israeli army officials that the Israeli artillery fired on the area shortly after unknown militants opened fire from the area on an Israeli army force that was patrolling the borders.

The borderline area between eastern Gaza Strip and Israel has been witnessing a series of violent actions and security tensions, mainly since the six-week rallies and marches organized in the coastal enclave in March 30 and will go on until May 15.

Al-Qedra said that since the start of the rallies, the Israeli army killed 33 Palestinians and wounded more than 3,000 demonstrators. Two more Palestinians were killed in the West Bank during the same period, according to medical sources.
