NAIROBI, April 20 (Xinhua) -- The Kenyan shilling closed the week on Friday at nearly three-year high against the U.S. dollar after it strengthened following a surge in inflows from the agriculture sector.

The local currency traded at an average of 100.20 but at one point touched a high of 100.00, from 100.40 where it ended on Thursday after firming against the greenback.

Commercial banks in the East African nation quoted the currency at the highest level of between 100.00 and 100.15 to the dollar from 100.35 and 100.55 in the Thursday trading.

The Central Bank of Kenya, on the other hand, placed the shilling at 100.25, a jump from 100.39 on Thursday.

Forex traders attributed the Friday's gain of the shilling mainly to inflows from the agriculture sector which had helped to offset demand for dollars from oil and retail importers.

Against the British Pound, the shilling strengthened marginally to end the week at 142.68 from 142.87 on Thursday. The shilling is expected to sustain the upward trend next week, according to analysts. Enditem
