MANAGUA, April 22 (Xinhua) -- Nicaragua's President Daniel Ortega on Sunday repealed a controversial reform of the country's welfare system that triggered riots that left 24 protesters dead.
Ortega said the Nicaraguan Institute for Social Security had voted to revoke the resolution approved on April 16, which intended to increase employer contributions while decrease the overall benefits.
The protests are widely regarded as the biggest challenge since Ortega took office in 2007, and this is his fourth term as president.
"The incident of violence that have happened are regrettable," and "we must reestablish order, we will not allow chaos, crime and looting to reign," said the president earlier.
