RIO DE JANEIRO, May 3 (Xinhua) -- Seven-time champions Independiente revived their hopes of advancing to the Copa Libertadores knockout phase with a 2-1 away victory over Corinthians on Thursday.

Forward Martin Benitez scored in the second minute for the Argentine outfit before Paraguayan forward Angel Romero turned the ball into his own net to hand the visitors a 2-0 lead.

Former Tianjin Quanjian midfielder Jadson pulled a goal back for the reigning Brazilian Serie A champions, who were reduced to 10 minute in the 80th minute when Emerson Sheik was shown a straight red card for violent conduct.

The result at Arena Corinthians lifted Independiente to second in Group G with two wins and two losses, one point behind Corinthians.

In Colombia, Boca Juniors' hopes of advancing beyond the group stage suffered a blow with a 1-1 draw against Junior de Barranquilla.

Luis Ruiz went from hero to villain by scoring the opener for the hosts before netting an own goal.

Junior remained second in Group H, three points behind Brazil's Palmeiras. Argentine giants Boca are third, a point further back, with two group matches remaining.

In Rio de Janeiro, Cruzeiro thrashed their Brazilian rivals Vasco da Gama 4-0 to take top spot in Group E. The defeat all but dashed Vasco's hopes of progressing to the knockout phase.

In other matches on Thursday, Argentina's Atletico Tucuman beat Uruguayan side Penarol 1-0 at home and Chile's Colo-Colo overcame Delfin 2-1 in Ecuador.
