BEIRUT, May 8 (Xinhua) -- A man was killed Tuesday evening in armed clashes between supporters of the Progressive Socialist Party (PSP) and the Lebanese Democratic Party (LDP) in the Mount Lebanon town of Choueifat.

A local source told Xinhua that the man, identified as Alaa Abi Faraj, was shot dead in clashes that erupted between adherents of both parties in the area.

Abi Faraj was a Civil Defense volunteer and a PSP supporter.

The exact circumstances of his death and the nature of the dispute remained unclear, but ties between the two parties have been tense due to the parliamentary elections results.

PSP leader Walid Joumblatt and LDP head Talal Arslan issued a joint statement calling on supporters of their parties to keep calm and maintain stability in the area.

"The parliamentary elections page has turned, and we are keen that no dispute takes place in the mountains even if the political vision on different issues diverges," the statement said.
