Tokyo stocks open flat following latest U.S-China trade moves

TOKYO, May 21 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened essentially flat on Monday on news that the United States and China would avoid sweeping trade tariffs for now in favor of ongoing talks towards a wider trade agreement.

As of 9:15 a.m. local time, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 34.81 points, or 0.15 percent, from Friday to 22,965.17.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange edged up 0.07 points, or 0.00 percent, to 1,815.32.

Glass and ceramics product, pulp and paper, and service-oriented issues comprised those that gained the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
