BANGKOK, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Thailand's capital Bangkok has seen a rising number of snakes found in urban homes as the city caught a whopping 4,612 snakes in 2017.

Statistics from the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation showed 4,519 of the snakes from people's homes are pythons.

The city, sitting on a flood plain with a wetland ecosystem which is a habitat for amphibians, is plagued by more and more snakes as housing expansions in recent years have curtailed their land, said Thai experts as quoted by local reports on Thursday.

But the experts from the department said snakes live in residential areas simply because they could eat mouses, and Bangkok's poor garbage management brings plenty of mice around in the trash.

Experts said 5,542 snakes have been found in Bangkok residence so far since 2017. The amphibians can eat up over 600,000 mouses a year, but as the city tries to keep snakes away, he believed there would be more than one million rats in Bangkok. Enditem
