KUNMING, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Senior legislator Wang Chen has called for strengthened efforts to prevent and control infectious diseases, and good implementation of the law on the prevention and control of infectious diseases.
Wang, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and vice chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, made the remarks during a trip to southwest China's Yunnan Province from Wednesday to Friday.
Wang stressed investment in border, minority and impoverished areas, improving the capacity and personnel of local institutions to prevent and control infectious diseases, and strengthened monitoring of diseases.
He also asked for a long-term mechanism for prevention and control coordinated between different government departments, supported by society, and guaranteed by law.
Yunnan, which used to have a high incidence of AIDS, has seen the number of new HIV and AIDS patients decrease for four years.
