TIRIN KOT, Afghanistan, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Twenty-four militants loyal to Taliban have been killed and two others wounded following military operations in the country's southern province of Uruzgan, an official said Monday.

The operation was launched by army commandos in restive Dihrawud and Daychopan districts of the province on Sunday, leaving 24 fighters dead and two others wounded, Ahmad Sadeq Isakhil, a press officer of Afghan army's 205-Atal Corps, told Xinhua.

Several enemies' fighting positions were also destroyed by the security forces, he said.

Security situation has been improving in Uruzgan, the former stronghold of Taliban, over the last months, as security forces have conducted search and cordon operations across the province. But the militants attack government interests in the province from time to time.

The Taliban militant group has yet to make comments.
