MANCHESTER, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Manchester United have signed Brazil international midfielder Fred from Ukraine's Shakhtar Donetsk, the English Premier League club said on Tuesday.

Fred used a day off from Brazil's pre-World Cup training camp in London to travel to Manchester, where he finalized details of a five-year contract.

"The Manchester United Football Club is delighted to announce it has reached an agreement with Shakhtar Donetsk for the transfer of Fred," the club said in a brief statement.

According to reports in Brazilian media, Man. United paid 55 million euros for the 25-year-old.

Fred joined Shakhtar in 2013 from Brazil's Internacional. He helped the Kiev-based side to three league titles, three Ukrainian Cups and four Ukrainian Super Cups.

The Brazilian has also caused controversy during his short professional career. In 2015, he was banned for a year from all games sanctioned by South American confederation CONMEBOL after testing positive for a diuretic.
