U.S. stocks close mixed amid economic data

NEW YORK, June 14 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks closed mixed on Thursday as investors digested a slew of major economic data.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 25.89 points, or 0.10 percent, to 25,175.31. The S&P 500 rose 6.86 points, or 0.25 percent, to 2,782.49. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 65.34 points, or 0.85 percent, to 7,761.04.

In the week ending June 9, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 218,000, a decrease of 4,000 from the previous week's unrevised level of 222,000, said the Labor Department. The four-week moving average was 224,250, a decrease of 1,250 from the previous week's unrevised average of 225,500.

On Wednesday, the Federal Reserve raised interest rates for a second time this year and projected two more rate hikes. It said the labor market continued to strengthen and that job gains have been strong.

The Commerce Department said Thursday retail sales rose 0.8 percent in May, exceeding market expectations. That also marked the biggest gain in retail sales since November. Enditem
