TEHRAN, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Iranians across the country took to the streets on Friday after their national football team recorded a victory against Morocco in its first match at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

After a late own goal saw Iran win the game 1-0, thousands of people poured into the streets in many cities across the country to celebrate Team Melli's second ever victory at the World Cup finals.

Iran's only other World Cup win came at the 1998 tournament in France, when goals from Hamid Estili and Mehdi Mahdavikia secured a 2-1 triumph over the United States.

But while Iran now top Group B with three points, the team's next two games against heavyweights Spain and Portugal will likely prove to be more difficult.

Iran face Spain in Kazan on June 20 and take on Portugal in Saransk five days later.
