Port industry helps transform fishing village into coastal urban area in E China

Transformed from a fishing village, Beilun is becoming a coastal urban area with port industry. Ningbo Economic and Technological Development Zone, Ningbo Free Trade Zone, Ningbo Daxie Development Zone, Ningbo Export Processing Zone and Ningbo Meishan bonded area are located in Beilun. The cargo throughput of Ningbo Zhoushan Port, with Beilun Port as its core, has ranked the first in a continuous nine years throughout the world. The population in Beilun has increased from 280,000 in 1985 to 980,000 in 2017. Per capita disposable income for urban and rural residents in Beilun reached 50,755 yuan (about 7,884 U.S. dollars). The GDP in Beilun exceeded 140.55 billion yuan (about 21.8 billion U.S. dollars) in 2017, up from 336 million yuan (about 52.2 million U.S. dollars) in 1985.
