In October 2014, Morales was re-elected and took office in January 2015 for another five-year term.
He visited China in January 2006 as Bolivia's president-elect. Five years later, he visited China again and attended the opening ceremony of the 26th Summer Universiade, a comprehensive games organized by the International University Sports Association, in Shenzhen, southern China.
In December 2013, Morales paid a state visit to China. In July 2014, President Xi met him during the dialogue between BRICS leaders and presidents from South American nations, a sideline event after the conclusion of the Sixth BRICS Summit in Brazil.
