CHANGCHUN, June 23 (Xinhua) -- A resident in northeast China's Jilin Province recently found a fossil which archaeologists believe is the tooth of a mammoth.

The fossil was found at a construction site in the provincial capital Changchun.

Chen Quanjia, an official with the Palaeontological Society of China, said that China's northeastern areas were mammoth habitats.

"The finding may date back around 20,000 years. However, its value for research is very low as the fossil is badly weathered," said Chen.

He also said Changchun is planing to build a mammoth and woolly rhinoceros fossil museum.
