NAIROB, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Kenya will bid to host the 2020 IAAF World Under-20 Championships in Nairobi.

A high caliber team of Kenya officials led by Sports Principal Secretary Karimi Kaberia and Athletics Kenya President Jack Tuwei on Friday visited the IAAF headquarters in Monaco to discuss Kenya's bid to host the event, which is also known as the World Junior Championships.

After successfully hosting the World U18 Championships in Nairobi last year, with crowds of up to 60,000 in attendance, Kenya is keen to host the next level of global competition to add to its rich history in the sport.

The world Under-18 is also known as the World Youth Championships.

"If we succeed with the World Under-20 bid to be staged in Nairobi in 2020, we may even bid for the World Championships," Tuwei told Xinhua on Friday from Monaco.

Kenya has had good performance in junior competitions for IAAF including being the overall winner more than three occasions, the last being in Moncton, Canada in 2010.

It is on this success that Kenya is bidding to host the biggest junior competition in the IAAF events in 2020. This year's World Junior Championships will be hosted in Tampere, Finland from July 10-15. Enditem
