BEIJING, June 27 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese company has made breakthroughs in biomass liquefaction, according to Wednesday's Science and Technology Daily.

Compared with current biomass fuel like ethanol and biodiesel, biomass liquefaction utilizes agricultural residues to produce clean liquid hydrocarbon fuel, said Cui Yongjun with Beijing Sanju Environmental Protection and New Material Co., Ltd.

The company has conducted research and development independently for five years.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences conducted repeated tests and showed that 2.1 tons of cornstalks could be converted to one ton of bio-liquid fuel containing less than 5 percent oxygen, said the newspaper.

This technique will lower the processing cost and improve the quality of the fuel, as well as remarkably reduce sewage discharge.

The technique is scheduled to be industrialized with a 5 million ton capacity in five years.

The company has applied for 80 invention patents for the technique.
